Amtrak
Denver to Sacramento

Next we drove to Denver, and got to our campsite that was reasonably close to the Denver Airport.  It was not a nice campsite, nor was it cheap.  But it was where we needed to be.  My X-File friends might recognize this trailer that was right next door to our campsite.
We christened it "the Kill Switch trailer" and listened for Twilight Time.  We didn't see any laser beams coming from the trailer, but we did see three black cats--probably Ester's influence.
We left our Denver campsite at 4am; parked at the Denver airport, and took a bus to the train station.  Then we waited... ...and waited... (kids playing Gameboy) And got on the train and slept!

It felt so good to relax in our beds and sleep on the train.  They even fed us breakfast.  Unfortunately, we got this far outside of Denver (see downtown in the distance) and we were stopped by a derailed UP freight train for four hours.  At least we had a great view.  The rest of the train trip just got later.

The ride through the Rockies was spectacular.  We passed through many parks, vistas and tunnels, including the longest one of all: the Moffett Tunnel.

The red red rock is where Colorado gets its name: colorful.
We slept through Utah.  We passed many cyclones and dust devils through the desert planes of Nevada.  And then passed right through the heart of old
town Reno, NV.  It was shocking seeing so many people after all that wilderness.
Donner Lake, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We passed, but did not see, Donner Crossing and Lake Tahoe.
