Her face smiles up at him from the dusty file. Do little girls even
wear braids anymore?

He's got no idea; he's not a father. Not anymore.

He pulls Luke's photo from his wallet, comparing the two lopsided
grins. She was older, but Luke could've taken her in a tug-of-war.

It's a nice idea, them two playing together. Samantha looks like a kid
whose pockets were crammed with jacks. He hopes she learned to share.

He doesn't think about what they've missed out on; that hurts too
much. Instead, he gives them a perpetual youth, together.

Sliding the pictures into the dual frame, he plants it on his desk.

Under his cotton shirt, the tattoo on his bicep reads, "We Will Never
Forget."

No, he won't.

There's another baby to protect now, but he can't forget these two
lost ones. Samantha wasn't his kid, but she is now. She and Luke live
on in his heart.
